RUF Summer 2009- 7 Deadly Sins
In the 6th Century AD, Pope Gregory the Great declared the following to be “deadly” sins, sins that could drag you out of a state of grace: LUST, GLUTTONY, GREED, SLOTH, WRATH, ENVY, PRIDE. Since then, the 7 seven deadly sins have woven their way as part of the warp of and woof of western culture...influencing everyone from Dante, Chaucer, to David Fincher's movie "Se7en." Even Gilligan's Island purposely patterned the 'seven stranded castaways' after the seven deadly sins. Though historic Protestantism rejected the idea of a special category of especially heinous sins, this list continues to provide a vivid window into the discussion of the Doctrine of Sin. If we don't get this doctrine right, then we miss the larger message of the Gospel completely.
