RUF Spring 2007- Ten Commandments

Every major world religion has a set of religious standards by which people gain entrance into a "holy" life. What sets Christianity apart is the fact that the Law as given by God to the ancient Jewish people was never intended to be an abstract set of principles to govern the behavior of its followers. Instead, the Ten Commandments are the very blueprint for human flourishing, according to the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe, Yahweh.

And yet, Christianity distinguishes itself still further by never setting forth obedience to the Law as a means by which people gain access into God's favor. Rather, the Law of God in the Bible is always pictured as the result of a life won by God. That is, Christianity teaches NOT that we obey God to earn his favor, BUT that having won God's favor by the work of Jesus on the Cross, the Ten Commandments show us the means by which we can express our love and affection for the one who has loved us so.

This semester we will be looking at each of the Ten Commandments to see both the means by which we can be what we were designed to be AND the motivation by which we can really change into what God wants us to be.
